A world drowning
in synthetics.
We chose cotton.
Modern Yogi was not born from a yoga trend. It was born from a crisis — the slow, invisible accumulation of microplastics in every corner of daily life.
The problem we
couldn’t ignore.
In 2019, our founders were living the kind of life that looked healthy from the outside — yoga practice, clean eating, conscious choices. But the more they looked at the materials surrounding them, the more they saw a contradiction.
The yoga mat was synthetic rubber. The activewear was polyester and nylon. The bedding was microfibre. Every wash, every stretch, every night’s sleep was releasing microplastic particles into water, air, and body.
Modern Yogi was founded on a simple conviction: if yoga teaches us to live in harmony with the world, our yoga equipment should not be poisoning it.
Yogic principles as a
decision framework.
Every product decision is tested against the same six principles that guide the practice. Not as marketing. As actual criteria.
No material that harms the body, the maker, or the earth. Microplastics violate Ahimsa. Synthetic dyes violate Ahimsa. We look for what doesn’t.
If a product contains natural rubber (our Cotton-Fusion variant does), we say so clearly. No greenwashing. No hidden ingredients. The spec sheet is the whole story.
Taking the harder path. Handweaving takes longer than machine manufacturing. Natural dyes are less predictable. We do it anyway because the result is worth it.
Cotton. Jute. Linen. Natural rubber where disclosed. No blends to cut costs. No synthetic fibres hiding in seams or labels. Every component is named.
We don’t chase trends. We don’t add new colours unless we’ve sourced the dye correctly. We don’t expand unless the supply chain can honour the standard.
Modern Yogi exists to make the microplastics crisis visible and show that alternatives are possible. Profit follows purpose. Not the other way around.
“We believe the mat beneath you should honour the same principles you practise on top of it — respect, balance, and a deep care for all living things.”

Centuries in the making.
India has one of the world’s oldest and most sophisticated cotton textile traditions. The dual-weave technique used in Modern Yogi mats has been refined over generations — creating a fabric that is simultaneously soft, breathable, and grippy.
The interlocking weave structure creates a surface that grips better with moisture and use. No coatings, no treatments — just the intelligence of the weave itself.
Colours sourced from plants, minerals, and natural pigments. Each batch has subtle variation — a mark of genuine craft, not mass production.
Pure, unblended cotton in every product — no synthetic fibres, no hidden materials. What you feel is exactly what it says on the label.
Direct relationships, fair wages, safe conditions. The craft knowledge belongs to the communities that developed it.
How we got here.
Two practitioners realise their entire yoga setup — mat, clothing, props — is made from synthetic materials that shed microplastics. The search for alternatives begins.
Travelling to weaving communities in India, learning the dual-weave cotton technique, testing dozens of natural dye formulations, and building direct relationships with artisan cooperatives.
The first Modern Yogi yoga mats go on sale. GOTS certification achieved. The Cotton-Fusion variant — with transparent natural rubber disclosure — is introduced alongside the DualWeave.
Modern Yogi Ltd is incorporated in Toronto, Ontario. Canada and India become the two pillars of the brand — headquarters and production, united by a shared commitment to natural materials.

Uniting People
With Planet.
A portion of every Modern Yogi purchase supports environmental causes. Because a brand built on natural fabric has a responsibility to protect the natural world that provides it.
A portion of every sale goes to reforestation and ecosystem restoration causes.
Direct, fair, long-term relationships with weaving communities in India. The craft stays in the community that owns it.
We actively publish and share information about synthetic material harm — because the crisis is only solvable if people understand it.
